The Lark and Her Young ones
A lark* had made her nest in the early spring on the young green wheat.*
Her young ones had almost grown to their full strength,* and could fly, when the owner of the field, looking over his ripe* crop, said, ?he time has come when I must ask all my neighbors to help me with my harvest.*"
One of the young larks heard him, and asked his mother where they should move for safety.
'There is no need to move yet, my son', she replied. "The man who only sends for his friends to help him with his harvest doesn't really mean it.?The owner of the field came again a few days later, and saw the wheat shedding* the grain because it was overly* ripe.
He said, "I will come myself tomorrow with my workers, and with as many reapers* as I can hire, and will get in* the harvest."
The lark on hearing these words said to her chicks,* "It is time now to be off,* my little ones, for the man is serious* this time. He no longer trusts his friends, but will reap the field himself."

종달새와 어린 새끼들
이른 봄날에 종달새가 초록 밀밭에 둥지를 틀었다.
어린 새끼들이 거의 완전히 자라서 날 수 있게 되었을 때, 밭주인이 잘 익은 곡식을 둘러보며 말했다. “이웃에게 추수를 도와달라고 부탁할 때가 되었군.”
그 말을 들은 어린 종달새 한 마리는 안전한 곳으로 옮겨가야 하지 않느냐고 어미 새에게 물었다.
“아직은 옮겨갈 필요가 없단다, 얘야.” 어미 새가 말했다. “추수를 도와달라고 친구를 부르려는 사람은 정말로 추수할 마음이 있는 게 아니란다.”
며칠 후 다시 온 밭주인은 밀이 너무 익어서 밀알이 떨어진 것을 보았다.
그가 말했다. “내일 일꾼들하고 추수꾼들을 되도록 많이 고용해서 내가 직접 와야겠군. 그리고 추수를 시작해야겠어.”
종달새가 이 말을 듣고는 새끼들에게 말했다. “얘들아, 이제 떠날 때가 되었다. 저 사람이 이번에는 진심이란다. 더 이상 친구들에게 의지하지 않고 직접 농작물을 거둬들일 거야.”
