존경하는 각 국 대표위원 여러분, 그리고 이 자리에 함께 하신 내외 귀빈, 신사 숙녀 여러분.
올해로 29번째를 맞는 한국외국어대학교 모의유엔총회(이하 HIMUN 총회)에 참석하신 여러분들께 감사의 말씀과 환영의 인사를 전합니다.
아울러 이번 회의가 성공적으로 개최될 수 있도록 협조를 아끼지 않으셨던 준비위원장님 이하 준비 위원님들, 각 국 대표님들, 그리고 통역 위원님들께 감사 드리는 바이며 본 회 의장으로서 이번 총회를 주재 할 수 있게 된 것을 영광으로 생각합니다.
유엔은 지난 60년간 인류의 염원인 세계 평화와 안정을 위해 주도적인 역할을 수행해 왔습니다.
유엔은 분쟁예방과 해결, 평화유지, 테러와의 전쟁, 세계문명 간 대화 등 여러 과제에서 많은 성과를 이루어 왔습니다.
그럼에도 불구하고 지구촌은 아직도 분쟁과 테러의 소용돌이 속에서 고통을 받고 있습니다.
특히 중동지역 평화 정착 문제는 관련 국가들간의 전략적 이해관계로 난항을 겪고 있어 항구적인 해결책을 찾는 데
어려움을 겪고있는 것이 사실입니다.
지금 중동은 이라크전쟁의 후유증을 겪고 있으며 또한 전쟁의 여파로 세계 여러 나라들이 테러의 위협에 직면해 있습니다.
중동 평화 문제는 이제 단순히 역내 문제가 아닌 세계적인 차원으로 확대 되어가고 있다는 점에서 그 어느 때보다 심도 있게 논의 될 필요가 있다고 생각합니다.
이렇듯 중동문제를 둘러싼 국제사회의 우려가 고조된 상황에서 '중동 평화를 위한 국제사회의 역할과 노력'을 이번 총회 의제로 선정한 것은 매우 시의적절 하다고 생각됩니다.
모쪼록 이번 회기에서 중동문제 관련국들간의 진지한 대화를 통해 평화정착의 길이 열리기를 바라면서 제29차 HIMUN 총회의 개회를 선언하는 바입니다.
Opening Remarks
Ladies and Gentlemen, honored guests, and distinguished delegates of all member states.
I would like to extend my?cordial welcome and?sincere appreciation to all of you who are present here today for the 29th Hankuk University of Foreign Studies International Model United Nations General Assembly. My special thanks also go to the chief organizer, her staff, and the interpreters for their impeccable preparations and zeal to make this assembly a success. It is a great honor and a privilege for me to preside?over such a meaningful event.
Since its inception in 1945, the United Nations has played the leading role in working for world peace and stability. It has made laudable accomplishments in many areas: preventing and ending regional conflicts, peacekeeping, combating terrorism, and initiating dialogues among civilizations around the globe. Nevertheless, our world is now witnessing unprecedented hostility and terrorism. Because of the religious and political confrontation among Middle East nations, it will be difficult to dismantle ideological barriers and end the conflicts in the region. The aftermath of?the Iraq War also accelerated expansion of terrorism and violence, which incurred the?detrimental consequences to world peace and stability. With this in mind, it is imperative that all nations convene to mull over for feasible measures?to seek a durable peace in the Middle East, which has become not only a regional but a global issue.
With international concern mounting over the situation in the Middle East, it is very opportune for us to adopt "The role and effort of international society for peace in the Middle East" as the?agenda for this year's Assembly. Hoping that?this session?will pave the way for forging peace in the Middle East through sincere and intensive dialogue, I hereby declare the 29th Model United Nations General Assembly open.
